VENUS – Normal-to-Pathological Pelvic Venous MRI: A Functional Reference Framework for Chronic Pelvic Pain Using Dynamic Ultrasound and 4D-Flow MRI
Pelvic MR venography often shows ovarian-vein dilatation, pelvic varices, or apparent iliac/renal vein compression in women without clinically relevant venous disease, so morphology alone cannot establish that chronic pelvic pain is venous in origin. VENUS will develop a radiation-free, multimodal functional framework — combining standardized dynamic duplex ultrasound, non-contrast MRI and quantitative 4D-flow MRI — to distinguish incidental MRV findings from a haemodynamically concordant venous phenotype. The project establishes a preliminary healthy reference atlas, tests whether functional imaging adds diagnostic value beyond morphology-only MRV, and includes a confirmed gynaecology/endometriosis comparator arm. The candidate will receive structured training in vascular imaging, dynamic ultrasound, MRI/4D-flow post-processing, reproducible clinical research methods and scientific publishing, producing three manuscripts and a doctoral thesis.
